Christmas Island Style
This season marks the 20th annual celebration of Christmas Island Style on Marco Island. Norgren was the mind child behind Christmas Island Style, Dave Rice, Sr. said in a recent interview. came up with the idea for the Island residents the citizens of the community. had been spending Christmas outside of Marco place that felt like Christmas needed to have something here. I came up with ideas and took them to the Chamber. I put a plan together that would fund itself, Norgren recalled. really took off. It one of those stuff that gives you goose bumps. started as a grunt. I volunteered and then I became chairman of the tree lighting and MC, i quickly became overall chairman. I began adding more activities. The idea in the beginning was to keep the three core events in tact tree lighting, boat parade and street parade. Then, we would add events sponsored by various organizations.
The Pilot Club started the luminaries around the block earlier. Now, the Snook Inn sponsors the Boat Parade. Santa arrival at Shops of Marco is an extremely festive evening for families. Ten years ago we started the house-decorating contest, and the Marco Eagle sponsored the sing-a-long at Mackle Park. Everything needed to be liberated to the public. For that decorating contest, we divide the Island into nine sections; each section includes a chairman along with a team. We come up with 20 homes from the nine zones as finalists and go ahead and take trolley on finals night to select the winner, Rice said.
