Excellent Gulf Wilderness Trip
Robin, Tucker and I headed out for a weekend of backpacking within the White Mountains final Friday morning (9.30.11). The day was lovely with blue skies and some fluffy clouds. We headed in from the trail head along Rt 16 just north of Pinkham Notch guests center. The hikes begins off having a great river crossing across a suspension bridge.
The trail was slightly soggy and tucker had a blast early on with a great deal of power (no thought of what lie ahead). We took our time and had some fun along the way, all the whereas climbing an easy grade hardly worth mentioning.
Along the Awesome Gulf Trail we entered the Gulf Wilderness Location and passed the Osgood cut off major towards the Osgood tent internet sites http://parrotsocietyoflosangeles.org/oldsite/oakley-outlet.html. It was at a beautiful sunny spot along the river that I realized I had forgotten to fill my fuel bottle for my camp stove. Given that the majority of our food was dehydrated AND rain was forecast I decided to go back for it instead of rely on creating fires for cooking. The round trip of about 4.5miles took about an hour. Whereas I was away, Robin grabbed some awesome shots of Tucker along the river (handsome puppy).
From the Bluff we descended to one more river crossing and newer suspension bridge. Just after the crossing, the trail became somewhat narrow cheap Oakley Sunglasses, a bit a great deal more technical and steeper. I located this area also somewhat hard to navigate as it intersects with all the Osgood Cutoff, Madison Gulf and you will find a handful of river crossings. A few fast compass readings and we had been really good to go. We have been climbing toward the head wall from the Presidential range. Its a stunning trail and it felt like we had the entire wilderness to ourselves (we saw three others the complete trip).
The trail progressively climbs due east along the Western Branch of the Peabody River. There can be river and tributary crossings that may many times be tricky. I’d been via the location before and was shooting for some tent internet sites that I’d seen but are not mapped. My memory was a bit fuzzy and we had to hike longer than I expected ultimately reaching our tent site around five:00 (10:45 trail head start off). I was hoping to obtain deep in to the Awesome Gulf region to set up a nice day hike on Sat and as it turned out we ended up going each of the way in towards the commence of Saturday’s loop hike just below the intersection of trails Six Husband and Buttress. We had been in the head wall from the Presidentials.
Rain was expected so I set up a canopy for cooking, consuming and hanging out. Subsequent we pitched our tent (a modest Mountain Hardware single wall bivy tent), hung a bear bag and finally filtered sufficient water for the evening. There was a tiny fire ring in our camp and so I constructed a fire http://www.29seven20.com/oakley-jawbone2013.html. It was wet but within about 30 minutes I had a nice blaze going. When I started dinner, Robin laid out our bags and inflated our mattresses. All in all, by the time it came time to consume we had been both pooped (including Tucker). It began to rain fairly fantastic shortly right after bed. By about 11 it was raining so hard that two men and women would must yell to be heard despite the fact that face to face. We had been each experiencing some splash but I know that to be regular with this tent and have been via some pretty decent storms just before. Robin was incredibly nervous and I tried to reassure her. I began, in spite of this, to notice that the floor on the tent was beginning to float (believe water bed) and what was slightly squishy within the starting became inches of water. In the rain, the tent began to fill up with water and we had to have out.
I geared up and bailed out. I could see quickly that our tent was pitched in a massive bowl and there have been several inches of standing water. I grabbed a cook pot and trowel and attempted to bail and trench the water away but I could not preserve up with it. Robin grabbed the gear from the tent and pulled it beneath the tarp however it was too late, most anything was wet, wet http://www.29seven20.com/oakley-jawbone2013.html, wet.
As a side note, and even though running around like a chicken devoid of a head cheap Oakley Sunglasses, inside the dark, in the rain, I hit my head pretty excellent on a overhead tree.
For the rest from the trip the rain was fairly relentless. I felt badly for Robin who’s a fair climate hiker. We’ve fairly very good technical rain gear and the hiking was pretty comfortable cheap Oakley Sunglasses. The river crossings on the way out have been considerably tougher plus the trail could too have been a river cheap Oakley Sunglasses. We both had began the day with dry / clean socks beneath a plastic liner into our wet hiking boots. This worked very good to get a whilst but eventually every little thing became wet cheap Oakley Sunglasses.
Back at the section of trail which gave me difficulty on the way in (near the suspension bridge) we continued south when we should really have stayed east and went about 40minutes out of our way on the Madison Gulf Trail. I’ve to say that the cackles on the back of my neck were beginning to rise as this trail was extremely ‘moosie’ with lots of fresh sign. This time of year will be the moose rut and Bulls could be aggressive. I was satisfied to discover that we needed to flip course and had been soon back on familiar turf once we reached the Bluff.
