SLess Cigarettes and Alcohol but More Drugs Used by Utah Teens

Utah teens take few risks when it comes to high quality cigarettes and alcohol. But they’re more likely than their national peers to have attempted suicide and tried illegal drugs, such as heroin. Fewer young Utahns are overweight,Christian Louboutin UK.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released results of its annual youth assessment. Teens in grades 9 to 12 were given an anonymous, self-administered survey.

No one knows how much sex Utah youth are having; Utah isn’t allowed to ask. Nationally,Grape 5s, nearly half of youth said they have had sex.

Some highlights of the 2009 report:

Tobacco

As usual,Grapes 5s For Sale, Utah stands out for having low cigarette use compared to the national averages:

– 23.5 percent had ever tried smoking, compared to 46 percent nationally;

But Utah teens who smoke are apparently more committed to the habit:

Alcohol and other drug use

Utah teens report far less alcohol use than others, but their rates of trying

illegal drugs — while low — are closer to or above national averages:

– 39 percent of Utah teens had ever tried a drink of alcohol, with 11.5 percent drinking for the first time before age 13. Nationally, 72.5 percent had ever drank, with 21 percent trying before they became a teen.

– But more Utahns have tried ecstasy (7.4 percent vs. 6.7 percent), taken steroid pills without a doctor’s prescription (4 percent vs. 3 percent), used a needle to inject an illegal drug (2.5 percent vs. 2.1 percent) and used heroin (3.2 percent vs. 2.5 percent).

Sexual behaviors

Nationally, 46 percent reported having ever had sex, with 80 percent not using birth control before their last sexual encounter.

– 16 percent of Utah teens report they were never taught about AIDS or HIV in school, higher than the 13 percent national average.

Injuries and Violence

About a quarter of Utah teens wear bike helmets, were in a physical fight at least once in the previous year, and felt sad or hopeless for more than two weeks — enough that they stopped participating in their usual activities.

– And more Utahns reported suicidal thoughts and attempts, with 15 percent seriously considering it, 11.5 percent making a plan and 7 percent attempting it in the prior year.

– 11 percent reported being hit, slapped or hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend.

Diet and Exercise

– 53 percent of Utah teens don’t get enough physical activity (an hour a day), compared to 63 percent nationally.

– Less than one out of five Utah teens ate five fruits and vegetables a day, slightly worse than the national average.

– 15 percent drank one soda a day, compared to 29 percent nationally.

– Fewer were overweight or obese: 17 percent compared to 28 percent.

– Six percent took diet pills (5 percent nationally), and 4.4 percent vomited or took laxatives (4 percent nationally).
